Metal Roof systems are very 
durable, the expectation when installing a metal roof is that you will never have to replace it. There are many colors, finishes, and profiles to choose from, some of which can help reduce heating and cooling costs by reducing radiant heat transfer. Deck Protection:
- Waterproof underlayment on the entire roof is the most expensive option but is needed to obtain a weather-tightness warranty.
- A good alternative is to use synthetic breathable underlayment with waterproofing in valleys.
- For the tightest budget, another alternative is to use felt underlayment. Waterproof underlayment in the valleys is still needed.
Leak Barrier:
- Waterproof underlayment or Ice and Water is needed, at least, in valleys with any non-waterproof deck protection.
Metal Panels:
- Standing seam or concealed fastener systems are very durable and there will be no hardware exposed to be worn out by the elements. These type of roofs, especially with waterproof underlayment throughout, should not need to be repair but if so, repairs are difficult.
This is a StandNSeam panel from Fabral, an example of a concealed fastener panel. - Exposed fastener panels are simpler to repair but the fasteners can be worn out by the weather.
Flashing:
- If the roof is installed correctly, the flashing (used to seal any ridges or penetrations) should be the same gauge and material as the roof panels.
- Metal roofs should have hook edge for the panels to be fastened to instead of drip edge (used on shingle roofs). Hook edge is larger and protects the decking from water running up under the panels.
Ventilation:
- Ridge vent which creates an opening along one or both sides of a ridge allows enough airflow to let hot air and moisture out of the attic. Ridge vent also minimizes penetrations which makes sealing the roof much simpler.
- Turbines or powered vents such as those used on shingle roofs can be used but each vent creates a penetration where the roof will be more susceptible to a leak. Extra penetrations will also increase the amount of waterproofing needed.
