The Difference Between Laminate and 3-Tab Shingles

Many shingle roofing services customers opt for the installation of 3-tab shingles simply because they are the cheapest roof option, without being fully educated on what they are purchasing. At Lone-Star Roof Systems we recommend laminate shingles, also known as architectural or composite shingles, because providing you with a quality roof is our top priority.

Durability: Laminate shingles are heavier and stronger than 3-tab shingles, being comprised of more material. Because of this, laminate shingles can withstand more intense weather conditions, whereas 3-tabs are often prone to leaks. Laminate shingles also retain their appearance longer than 3-tab shingles, extending the life of your roof.

Cost: The short term cost of 3-tab shingles is cheaper than laminate shingles, however, laminate shingles have a much longer lifespan, saving you money in the long run.

Warranty: 3-tab shingles typically have a manufacturer's warranty of 20 to 30 years. Because of their greater reliability, laminate shingles have manufacturer warranties ranging from 30 to 50 years.

Appearance: Laminate shingles have more of a dimensional appearance, which make your roof more aesthetically pleasing.

Resale Value: Due to both aesthetic appearance and durability, laminate shingles give your home a higher resale value.

Cool Roofs

Cool roofs are shingles created to reflect solar wavelengths rather than absorb them like traditional shingles. Initially, cool roofs were limited to lighter shades, such as white. However, with new technology, manufacturers have been able to create solar reflective shingles in a variety of colors. Dark-colored, traditional shingle roofs can reach a temperature of 190 degrees in the sun, resulting in higher utility bills and faster shingle deterioration. With cool roof shingles, you can reduce those high utility bills, improve the overall comfort of your home, and extend the life of your roof. In the end, installing a cool roof will save you money, whether it’s on bills or shingle roofing services on installing a new roof.
