Slate or Not Slate, Can You Spot the Difference?

Slate has been used for roofing material in America since the 17th century and has long been known for its distinct look and durability. With modern technology, DaVinci Roofscapes can now produce products with similar durability that are almost indistinguishable from genuine slate. DaVinci products are made from TPO, an engineered plastic-like material which is widely used in commercial construction because of its strength and ease of installation. Before you read more, take the challenge, see if you can spot which of these roofs are genuine slate and which are DaVinci Roofscapes.

See if you can tell which pictures are of real slate and which are not, then click the "read more" link and scroll to the bottom to check your answers.

The Look

DaVinci Roofscapes achieves the look of genuine slate by making 8 different molds of real pieces of slate and injecting the TPO. To enhance the look of the finished product, DaVinci used 5 different widths in their multi-width products and 1/2 inch thick molds which correspond to the most durable and expensive slate products (versus 3/16 inch thick slate).

Ease of Installation

Slate alternatives offer lower labor costs because they are light weight, use less waste, and are factory collated for width and color pattern. Factory collation saves time and labor because with genuine slate, installers must sort and pattern the slate on site.

Like genuine slate, DaVinci products carry a Class A fire retardant rating, 110 mph wind resistance, and Class 4 UL2218 impact resistance. Genuine slate is freeze/thaw resistant in most climates, excluding Alpine regions, while DaVinci product are freeze/thaw resistant in all regions.
