The Pros and Cons of Metal Roofs

As we have seen in the past, a hurricane can be rather destructive. Fortunately, a metal roof can withstand winds up to 110 mph, which is almost necessary when living in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and other Gulf Coast states. If strong winds happen to blow through your neighborhood, it has been noted that often times a metal roof will remain in a sea of houses with severe roofing damage, where composition shingles will simply blow off. Last but DEFINITELY not least, metal roofs are green! Green materials are safe for both humans and the environment. Not only are you using a reusable resource, but you can also earn green building credits and a cut in your taxes!

There aren’t very many cons to upgrading to a metal roof. Some people think a metal roof is noisy. Despite the common misconception, they aren’t! With solid sheeting, insulating your roof will create a sound barrier. Breathable roofing underlayment helps preserve roofing deck, it increases energy efficiency, and it will add to the sound protection. The only downside of metal roofing is the initial cost. The price difference between a standard laminate shingle roof and a metal roof, is quite a jump, but you get what you pay for! Since they are more durable and last 3X as long, the overall investment will pay off in the long run.
