Do You Have a Contractor License?
A few Texas areas, including Austin, require roofing contractors to have a license before they can do any roofing work. Note that a contractor license is different from a business license, so you should ask for the former specifically. Do You Have Proper Insurance?
Insurance should always be present regardless of what remodeling project is in progress. Coverage descriptions may be worded differently, but it should always include liability insurance and workers’ compensation. Liability insurance covers accidental property damage while workers’ compensation (or “workers’ comp”) covers accidental worksite injuries. Both protect you from being held liable in case either or both happens.
Do You Have References?
The best way to sample actual roofing work done by a roofing contractor is to inspect their past work. Reputable contractors should have no problem providing the contact information of at least three recent clients. We recommend that you make the effort and call each one, ask questions, and if possible, inspect their roofs personally.
Do You Have a Physical Location?
Online transactions have become so common that it’s easy to forget the importance of actual brick-and-mortar locations. Contractors with a physical location and showroom not only allow you the opportunity to inspect their products in person, but it also assures that they are less likely to run out on you in case of warranty claims. Do You Offer Workmanship Warranties?
The ideal roofing warranty should cover both material and workmanship warranties. The latter is especially important, as not all contractors offer this.
