This option is pricey but also the best quality. These hardwood shingles are native to the tropics and naturally resistant to moisture, insects, and decay[1]. Option 2: Stone-Coated Steel by Decra, $$$ – ★★★★

Stone coated steel looks similar to composition shingles (aka asphalt shingles) but offers the durability and longevity of steel. Decra products carry a Class A fire safety rating and a Class 4 UL2218 Impact resistance rating. Option 3:  Designer Composition Shingles by GAF*, $$$ – ★★★

Composition shingles cover about 90% of roofs in America. They are an economical product and come in a variety of styles and colors, some of which mimic other materials such as wood shakes or slate. GAF offers a designer shingle product called Grand Sequoia, pictured here in the Shakewood color. The large shingles and strategic cut give the dimensional effect of wood shakes at a fraction of the cost. Designer shingles are more appealing than lifetime shingles but of comparable quality. Option 4: Lifetime Compositions Shingles by GAF*, $$ – ★★★

This is the actual brand and type of shingle featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. For this look, GAF offers Timberline HD shingles in Shakewood, as pictured.
